3 Tips for Choosing an Orthodontist

The majority of people will need or consider orthodontic treatment at some point in their lives. Here are three tips for choosing an orthodontist.

1. Look for the Best One Close to You

Orthodontic care typically requires regular checkups and adjustments, so you should always look for the best orthodontist closest to where you live. Doing so will save you time and money. For example, if you live in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, then look for dental and orthodontist offices that offer orthodontics Upper Darby PA, as well as the surrounding area.

2. Check Who Offers Free Consultation Appointments

Many orthodontists will offer free initial appointments for assessment or consultation. Some will charge a relatively small fee. This systems allows you the freedom to visit several offices to determine whether the services provided will meet your needs. You should always check with the office about the policy surrounding initial consultations because some offices will charge full price even for an assessment appointment. If you go to a consult that costs the full price and you don’t decide to continue seeing that orthodontist, then you’ll have wasted that money.

3. Talk To Your Dentist

Orthodontics requires more schooling and experience than dentistry. While some dentists may also be orthodontics, others won’t have the appropriate credentials to practice orthodontics. However, your regular dentist should be able to discuss your orthodontic needs and options, as well as refer you to an orthodontist with those credentials who will be able to treat you effectively. Your dentist is likely to have connections to highly qualified orthodontists in your area that you should have good experiences with.

Your choice in orthodontist will depend on your orthodontic needs. If you need basic treatment, such as braces to straighten teeth, you’re likely to have a wide variety of options. More  specific issues, such as congenital missing teeth, may require an orthodontist with experience in that area.
